Plant Pests & Diseases

Although Island County enjoys a mild Mediterranean-type climate, the cool rainy season does influence the type of plant pests and diseases we have. For example, we have a very vigorous snail and slug population! Other common pests are deer, rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, birds, moles and voles. Tent caterpillars also appear cyclically. All types of plants – vegetables, ornamentals, and conifers – can be infested with aphids or spider mites

Fungi such as black spot, rusts and powdery mildew affect many species. Fruit trees can be infected with apple scab and pear scab. Stone fruits are subject to peach leaf curl and brown rot.
